The WSSSRP III Nigeria project held a workshop on the 22 March 2017 to celebrate World Water Day. The workshop was held in Jos and was on the theme of “Water and Waste Water”, and was in collaboration with the Plateau State Government. The purpose of the event was to join the world as it celebrated annual World Water Day, whilst at the same time bringing focus and attention to “Waste Water Treatment” in Nigeria.
David Jaafaru Wuyep, the commissioner representing the Executive Governor of Plateau State and members from the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy inaugurated the workshop. Also amongst the attendees of the event were high-level representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Development, UNICEF, WaterAid, COWAN, NEWSAN, CBD-NGO Forum and others. During the meeting, participants were introduced to the Waste Water Chapter in the National Strategy on Water Resources, by the Federal Government in 2016.
The members of line ministries, stakeholders and CSOs in Nigeria, engaged in tackling Water Sanitation in Nigeria have launched a proposal for improvement in the sector, based on the inputs delivered by Human Dynamics’ expert team, delivered under through technical assistance. The participants agreed that there is a need to review and update the existing WASH Policy passed in 2012 in alignment with the National Water Resources Policy of 2016. The Plateau State Government will also focus on the use of waste water within other sectors, especially in agriculture.
