The overall objective of the RIDP is the improved livelihood of rural population through infrastructure development. Its purpose is to enhance the socio-economic situation of the rural and peri-urban population through improving small scale infrastructure and promoting activities. The programme aims to consolidate the achievements of the Income Generating Public Works Programme (IGPWP) in the 15 poorest districts (out of 28) of the country. The expected results of RIDP are:
- Rural roads infrastructure are improved
- Small scale irrigation infrastructure developed
- Implementation capacity of District Assemblies (DAs) enhanced
Human Dynamics’ consortium is providing a Technical Assistance to the Programme Implementation Unit (PIU) of the RIDP since January 2012 (and for 4 years). The Technical Assistance team together with the PIU enhanced the District Assembly capacity to manage programme planning implementation, monitoring and evaluation based on the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy decentralization policy and management system, integrating effectively crosscutting issues of environment, gender and HIV/AIDS.
One major communication and visibility recent event was the RIDP launch, held in Nkhwangwa Village, T/A Malili, Lilongwe, on Wednesday 13th June, 2012, which was attended by over 500 people, including high level authorities of the Government of Malawi, District Commissioners, RIDP beneficiaries, and rural people of the surrounding villages, and representatives of the media organizations. The main objectives of this meeting was to share with the local communities the top priorities of the Government of Malawi and the EU mainly the expectations of the EU for the success of RIDP, the steps to build institutional and local capacity of rural communities, the improvement of the national irrigation strategy, how the GoM implements Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness to generate best results for the people of Malawi from RIDP.
